Touch Pen
In 2024, in a depression spiral I’d buy a DSiLL in a maroon color. It would arrive in perfect shape. I’d then proceed to buy 3 different flashcarts because my extant flash cart didn’t work. I’d do the best part of video games: organizing and collecting digital files. Imagining all the great video games I’d definitely play.
Of course once everything was set up and the beautiful console was proved to work, I put it on the shelf to collect dust.
In Spring 2025 I took it off the shelf. I opened it up and browsed the games. I started up something. I flicked out the touch pen. I almosted gagged. It reaked of old cigarettes. Just overwhelming. I couldn’t believe it caught me like that. The worst part is it made me nostalgic for Heisei Japan, where everything stunk of cigarettes all the time.
Any depiction of the past should have everyone smoking, because everyone smoked. It smelled bad all the time. You’d get cigarette burns on your hands from just walking down the street. It sucked. Stores and businesses were crusty with ash.
And yet there in 2025 I missed it.
