There is nothing that marks 2023 and video games for me more than being part of a continuous internet community for 20 years in this year, 2023.
I started writing this like last year’s. I then read too many fukubukuros of old. So you’re going to get whatever form this takes. It’s a real fukubukuro. I don’t even know what I am going to write just yet.
A fukubukuro is a lucky bag sold at New Years in stores across Japan. In theory it gives loyalty to the customers that purchase one. In practicality, it lets stores get rid of stock they haven’t sold.
In terms of this essay/article, it will be things that happened to me in Video Games in 2023. Not the best or the worst games I played. It won’t even be reviews necessarily. Just a collection of thoughts about how I keep playing video games in 2023 and into 2024.
NEXT: While in Kawagoe, a man approached me and asked me to identify the cursive signature on what I think was pornographic fanart. I did my best and then he took his leave.
